Writing a research paper is no easy task. The very words, "Research Paper", strike fear into the heart and soul of every college student in the Nation.
At the beginning of this class, I knew it would be difficult to complete this assignment. But I enjoy writing, it's an activity that has been part of my life ever since I was a little girl. I've written short stories, essays, chapters to future novels, newspaper articles, opinion pieces and so on and so on. So, part of me was excited for a chance to hone my writing skills by taking on a big project, such as a Research Paper.
Here is the secret about writing: it's actually very easy. As long as you have passion and determination, your writing can be great. Here is the other secret about writing: it takes a good idea. None of the above can happen if you're missing this one step.
In marketing they call it the "Big Idea". It's the spark of an idea that fuels ambitious projects: big ideas can change the world. In writing, the absence of a big idea is commonly known as writers block.
Writers block is a curse. And that is what I've had concerning this paper. If you're going to write a 10-page paper, you need to write about something you're going to find interesting for long enough to actually do the research and then write the paper.
There were so many ideas floating in my head, but none of them satisfactory. I needed a really good idea, a passionate idea, an interesting and motivating idea.
To be honest with you, I don't know where my idea even came from. Well, maybe that's a lie. I kind of know. As an active member of the Nonprofit club here on BYU campus, I know a lot of Nonprofits and am familiar with their work. There is one particular organization that I have felt connected with ever since I learned about the work they do, more than 4 years ago.
Operation Underground Railroad is a Nonprofit based in Salt Lake City, which is relatively close to BYU campus. The CEO, Tim Ballard, is an ex-CIA agent who quit his job at the CIA--where he performed sting operations on human traffickers around the world--and then started this Nonprofit to continue that work as a private citizen. As a government official, his hands were tied in different circumstances where he wanted to provide additional help, but as a private citizen he can continue the work he was doing and even more.
Tim's story resonated with me, I saw him as a defender of human life, integrity, and virtue. I've known for years that the work he does is something that I want to be a part of.
So the idea has been there, for years, in the back of my mind.
When it finally began to come forward, I knew this was a topic I needed to know more about. Over the writing process, my initial idea changed from Human Trafficking and began to encompass Pornography as a whole; what is it, how it influences us emotionally and mentally, how that affects our society.
It's been a hard topic. I've had to come into contact with many essays, testimonials, and various research that graphically explains the harmful nature of this drug. But in the end, I can stand as a defender of virtue, integrity and honest-to-goodness love, because of what I have learned. I believe I have come out stronger and even wiser.
Sometimes the hard journeys are worth the effort.

I love how honest this post is. I'm really interested in reading your paper!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree! I think there are so many options when it comes to writing a paper. However, when I started thinking about my topic I wanted to do some research so I knew I would be able to write about enough.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! What a great non-profit. It's always better to write about something your passionate about, a worth while cause.
