Reading has always been a big part of my life. I remember first learning how to read and thinking to myself that it was too hard, I couldn't do it, I was just going to be illiterate for the rest of my life (these were my thoughts, although perhaps not the same word choice).
I did learn to read, and it quickly became my favorite past time. Long late hours into the night with a book, my parents would have to come and turn my light off or I would never have slept.
I love the feel of the binding in between your hands, the smell of the pages is almost as intoxicating as the story within--and so I could never really get behind books on tape. I felt like I would be missing something if I didn't have the book in my hand.
My brother however, loves Audible. He loves it with a capital L. It might have something to do with his lifestyle; he works construction and is always moving around, driving, and working. His job calls for early mornings and sometimes late nights. He simply doesn't have time to sit down and read a book, he never has, he's a little too antsy.
So Audible is perfect for him, because it satisfies his insatiable desire to learn, while being on the go.
One day he called me up and absolutely insisted I login to his Audible account and start listening to the books he had. And thus began the sibling book club.
Calvin buys the books, we read them, and then we discuss them via our group chat (appropriately entitled "Book Club").
It's been a bonding experience, because although all of us live far away and separate from each other, we can all connect through these books. Calvin and I have spent hours on the phone discussing our latest read, debating the highs and lows of the story, the writing style, even the narrator.
I find that I enjoy listening to books just as much as I enjoy reading them. It's convenient to listen in the morning on my way to class, or on my way home, while driving, doing the grocery shopping, and everywhere in between. I can listen while I draw, or cook, or even do homework (although that last one is not advisable, lots of spelling mistakes).
In the end, Audible has been one thing that has drawn us together as a family. And for me, that's what it's all about.
I miss reading for fun. I might try this, thanks!
